Spiritual Penicillin – A Dog Story

Human and dog relaxing in a field | Spirtual Penicillin - A Dog Story from Share The Gift's weekly newsletter The Message

Four nights in a row with no sleep. Our dog had a problem that caused barking every 30 minutes or so all night long. As often happens, the problem developed over the weekend and our vet could not see us until Monday morning. By the time I arrived with our sick pet, I think I felt just as sick.

Thankfully a correct diagnosis was made, clearly Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), and a shot of penicillin gave us our sleep back that night. So many things we take for granted in life, but after this latest experience, I am beyond grateful for good ol’ penicillin!

Penicillin has a very interesting history. Discovered by accident in 1928, it has become the most widely used antibiotic in the world. The cure came from a careless lab technician returning from vacation. Quite a story!

I was so grateful for our vet when I brought our suffering canine home. The key to success was the ability to identify the problem. Revelation of UTI led to the solution that any good vet would know to do. Prescribe an antibiotic. Problem solved.

The greatest problem that faces the human race is sin. God has over and over again told us through His Word and His messengers that we are sick and in desperate need for help. But, mankind has often not appreciated this revelation. Rather than admit sin and get the prescription, man has used any number of denial responses to avoid dealing with spiritual sickness. Denial of sin guarantees disastrous consequences.

“The wages of sin is death.”

Romans 6:23

God is our Great Physician and Jesus is our Healer. He has come to cure our diseases.

“He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

Matthew 8:17

Jesus Christ is our Spiritual Penicillin. He takes away our sin through forgiveness. We can be set free from the wages of sin IF we confess our sins and ask Him to take them away.

“If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9

If the vet either misdiagnosed the problem or gave us the wrong medication, we would have a calamity on our hands. But that’s just what is happening in our world today wherever sin is denied or accepted as normal.

Sin, like cancer, like UTI, is not just going to disappear on its own. We need a powerful Antibiotic to save us!
